Up to 100 mm of rain: here are the risks

Floods and flash floods

The conclusion of this weekend of record heat was most striking: violent storms and torrential rains affected several regions of Quebec. Flooding has been reported in many places. In Trois-Rivières, we saw dozens of cars immobilized on the shoulder of Highway 40, due to heavy rainfall.

Precipitation in sight

A moisture-soaked system takes over. Rainfall will continue throughout the province all day Monday, before ending Tuesday morning.

Heavy accumulations are expected and might even reach 100 millimeters in some places. In general, several regions will be entitled to regarding fifty millimeters.

Risks to watch out for

Such a quantity of water is not trivial and can cause several hazards. Hydroplaning is one of them: wet pavement and puddles are conducive to loss of control, especially at high speeds. Caution will be required on the roads over the next few days.

Additional flash floods might also occur.

In addition, the soils are saturated with water and may not be able to absorb all the precipitation. Pieces of earth might slip, encouraged by heavy rains, and cause landslides.
