This Sunday, Gustavo Petro took office as the new president of Colombia in a crowded ceremony that took place in the Plaza de Bolívar, in the center of Bogotá.

After finishing his speech, in which he outlined his commitments for the next four years, the new president, the first from the left in the country’s history, went to the Casa de Nariño, where he greeted the military leadership and, later, He received the command at the door of the official residence of the outgoing president, Iván Duque.

Petro, Duque and their families greeted each other briefly and then the former president Duque left the Casa de Nariño with his wife, María Juliana Ruiz, some members of his cabinet and the head of the outgoing Military House, Colonel Anuar Fernando Saadat.

Upon entering the residence, President Petro along with his wife, Verónica Alcocer, and their children greeted a group of workers and went to one of the halls for the inauguration of the cabinet of ministers.

Minutes earlier, in a lengthy speech, Petro outlined 10 commitments to Colombians during his term. The president assured, first of all, that he will work to “achieve true and definitive peace.”
