Brazilian police said they arrested a German diplomat on Saturday for the alleged murder of her Belgian husband at their home in Rio de Janeiro.
Uwe Herbert Hahn, a diplomat at the German consulate in Rio de Janeiro, told authorities that her Belgian husband Walter Henri Maximilien Biot collapsed suddenly on Friday night hitting his head to his death, police said.
But, according to the first findings on the body and in the apartment of the couple in the upscale neighborhood of Ipanema, the alleged victim was violently beaten.
“The version of events given by the consul, according to which the victim fell, is incompatible with the conclusions of the forensic report”, estimated the police officer Camila Lourenco in comments posted on the social networks of the local police. from Rio.
“Several hematomas were observed, including on the torso, corresponding to injuries inflicted by trampling, as well as lesions corresponding to an attack with a cylindrical object,” she said.
The local police Instagram account posted photos of what appear to be bloodstains on the floor and furniture in the couple’s apartment.
According to local media, Mr. Hahn attempted to clean up the crime scene before police arrived. The diplomat then told the officers that her husband had been drinking heavily and had taken sleeping pills.
Mr. Biot was a week away from his 53rd birthday according to a photo of his identity card, published by the Brazilian press.
The German embassy in Brasilia did not immediately respond to AFP’s requests for information.
