[ロンドン 4日 ロイター] – The ruling Conservative Party leadership election debate was held on the 4th, and Foreign Minister Truss and former Finance Minister Sunak had a heated debate over future economic management and other issues as they entered the run-off election.

On the same day, the Bank of England raised the policy interest rate by 0.5 percentage points from 1.25% to 1.75%, and as inflation increased due to rising energy prices, household finances became more difficult. I expected a prolonged recession.

Truss argued that the central bank’s forecast might be changed by tax cuts. He pointed out that the government’s decision to raise the tax burden to the highest level since the 1950s was the cause of the economic recession, and added, “You can’t achieve growth through taxation. It’s the highest level in 70 years. Some current taxes are likely to lead to a recession.”

When Sunak was finance minister, he had a history of raising taxes to finance measures to deal with the novel coronavirus.

During the debate, Mr Sunak criticized Mr Truss’s reckless borrowing and tax cut proposals, which would lead to higher inflation. “It just makes things worse,” he said.
