Twenty-two new federal section radars in service in the fall

Currently, there are 43 on so-called federal sections of the (motor) road network, according to the daily Het Nieuwsblad. The information was confirmed Thursday by the office of Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open Vld). According to this, no quota is no longer used for the 43 active systems on federal sections. By the end of the summer, the five radar sections which still use a margin of tolerance should have abandoned it, we read in a response from the Minister of Justice to a written question from MP MR Philippe Pivin. For the first time, no quota or margin of tolerance will be applied, but only “technical” margins, the minister’s office said on Thursday.

In February 2021, only two section radars were active on federal sections in Belgium.

In October 2021, there were 22, ten with tolerance margins and four with quotas.

Next October, some 65 such devices are expected to operate permanently.

“In terms of road safety, our country scores less well than its neighbours, but also than Spain and Italy,” commented Minister Van Quickenborne’s office.
