A journalist, also a businessman, and two other people were killed in an attack on a bar in the violent central state of Guanajuato, authorities and a non-governmental organization to defend journalists announced on Wednesday.
These sources said that Ernesto Mendes, director of the newspaper “To Foz”, was killed with two other people in a bar by unidentified assailants in San Luis de La Paz, Guanajuato state (central).
“Gunmen stormed a bar belonging to the Mendes family,” the non-governmental organization for the defense of journalists, Article 19, said.
She added that Mendes had received threats before, noting that at least 13 journalists had been killed since the beginning of the year.
But the Mexican government says only 10 journalists have been killed since the beginning of the year, noting that the other two were not practicing when they were killed.
According to the government, 20 people were arrested.
The Mexican branch of Reporters Without Borders asked the authorities not to exclude any hypothesis in the investigation, including the victim’s journalistic work.
