Ifrane designated “City of wetlands” by the Ramsar Convention – mafrique

Ifrane has just been appointed “City of Wetlands” by the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

This global consecration for Ifrane, which thus becomes the first Moroccan city to obtain this distinction, will be officially recorded during the 14th session of the Conference of Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, scheduled for November 5 to 13, 2022.

Result of a collaboration between the province of Ifrane, the Urban Commune of Ifrane, the National Agency for Water and Forests, the WWF and Living Planet Morocco, this accreditation is a recognition of the commitment of the city of Ifrane to safeguard its urban wetlands for people and nature.

It should be recalled that on the occasion of the celebration of World Wetlands Day in 2020, the province of Ifrane had officially announced the candidacy of the famous city of the Middle Atlas for the label “City of Wetlands” awarded by the Ramsar Convention and its support in the preparation of its application file by WWF and Living Planet Morocco.

This label will encourage the city of Ifrane to promote the conservation management of its wetlands and to generate sustainable socio-economic benefits for the benefit of local populations. It will also develop and strengthen a positive relationship with these valuable ecosystems, including through increased public participation and awareness as well as careful consideration of wetlands in urban planning and decision-making.

With the recent accreditation of the new 25 candidate cities, including Ifrane, the select club of “Wetland Cities” will have a total of 43 cities located in 17 countries. (With MAP)
