Pelosi, Taiwan TSMC Chairman, to meet… Comprehensive discussion of US semiconductor plant expansion

TSMC is building a plant in Arizona… “Confirmation of the proportion of semiconductors in economic security”

The Washington Post (WP) reported on the 2nd (local time) that U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who visited Taiwan in a blitz during her Asian tour, met with Liu Dein (Mark Liu), chairman of TSMC, Taiwan, the world’s largest foundry (semiconductor consignment production) on the 3rd. ) reported.

According to the report, Chairman Pelosi, who arrived in Taiwan the night before, is expected to meet with Chairman Ryu to discuss the semiconductor industry promotion bill recently passed by the US Congress and expansion of semiconductor factories in the US.

The bill includes a plan to provide $52 billion (regarding 68 trillion won) to the semiconductor industry in the United States, including the construction of semiconductor facilities, research and labor development, and defense-related semiconductor manufacturing.

It also included a 25% tax credit for companies building semiconductor factories in the United States.

TSMC is considered a key company that supplies semiconductors in large quantities to the US and the West.

TSMC semiconductors are used in the latest stealth fighter F-35 and Javelin missiles manufactured by the US, and Apple also relies on this company.

The meeting between Chairman Pelosi and Chairman Liu is a case in which semiconductors play a large role in the US economy and security, the WP analyzed.

The United States has been seeking to establish a US plant for TSMC in case of an emergency following China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, has been pouring out hard words toward Taiwan for years.

Accordingly, TSMC decided to invest 12 billion dollars (regarding 15.7 trillion won) in May 2020 to establish a factory in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

This plant, which mass-produces 5-nanometer (nm = 1 billionth of a meter) process semiconductor products, which is the foundation of high-tech industry, is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

TSMC has been reviewing facility expansion at its Arizona plant, and when the US semiconductor law is enforced, the discussion is expected to accelerate.

The lack of engineers to work at the factory is mentioned as the key to the expansion of the semiconductor factory, but TSMC is already pushing for talent development, the WP reported.

Meanwhile, Chairman Pelosi, who visited Taiwan amid China’s intensive checks, is expected to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and then leave the country following visiting the Legislative Council (Parliament), the Human Rights Museum, and meeting with Chinese dissidents.
