The Cardinals were reportedly one of three finalists in the bid to acquire Juan José Soto. However, it seems that the club did not want to include outfielder Dylan Carlson in the possible transaction, which affected their chances of getting the gunslinger, who finally ended up in San Diego in a megachange.
So how do the Cardinals fare for the final hours of the trade deadline, scheduled for today at 6 pm ET? According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals have a “wide net and acquiring a hitter or a player who provides depth for the catcher, as well as an additional pitcher, might not be ruled out.”
Adding a catcher would make sense for St. Louis. Puerto Rico’s Yadier Molina is expected to return from the disabled list today, but he has a .519 OPS over 136 at-bats in his last year in the majors. Andrew Knizner has a .575 OPS and Austin Romine was designated for assignment Monday.
