Australian Nick Kyrgios, finalist of the last Wimbledon tournament, announced that he would not participate in the Laver Cup (September 23-25).
“No Laver Cup for me this year!!! I just wanted you all to know“, said on social networks the former world No. 13, now down to 63rd place. “I have to spend time with my family and my lovely girlfriend“, justified the 27-year-old Australian, who also gave up the singles table of the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta (July 25-31). Kyrgios however won the doubles with his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
In this 5th edition of the Laver Cup, Kyrgios was supposed to join the world team alongside the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, as well as the Americans Taylor Fritz and Jack Sock.
The team coached by the legendary John McEnroe loses an essential element especially since it will leave with an outsider status once morest the formidable European team composed among others of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. This exhibition, created in 2017, is organized by the company Team 8 managed by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick.
