Red Bull Racing F1 team principal Christian Horner has defended Sergio Perez following being accused by Red Bull F1 motorsport adviser Helmut Marko.

After qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Sergio Perez was eliminated in Q2, Helmut Marko accused Perez of already going into ‘summer vacation mode’.

But Christian Horner told Sky F1: “The other day I joked with Helmut and said ‘I think the Czech Republic is already on holiday’ and he told everyone!”

Kuschan Horner praises Sergio Perez’s race at the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix. Perez, who started from eleventh on the grid, finished fifth.

However, Christian Horner is confident Sergio Perez would have challenged for the podium if the virtual safety car intervention hadn’t been delayed following Valtteri Bottas’ on-track stop.

“Look at the Czech race later today,” said Christian Horner.

“Without that VSC, he would have challenged both George[Russell]and Carlos[Sainz]on the podium at the end. He was very fast.”

“I think we’ll reset during the summer break and figure out what went wrong for him in the last few races. He’ll come back stronger following Spa.”

Perez’s teammate Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, his eighth win of the 2022 season.

After a difficult day on Saturday, Christian Horner said Red Bull smelled a chance to win following seeing Ferrari switch Charles Leclerc to hard tyres.

, the soft tires lasted much longer than I expected. At that point, we committed to two stops and went soft-medium-medium.”

“I think there were some key moments, but the key moment in the race for us was when we saw Charles change to the hard tyres. ‘Okay, this really gave us a chance.’ I thought”

“Czech was great. He had a different strategy. He put Max right behind Charles and let him pass.”
