Sntp denounces harassment against journalist by mayor in Mérida

The National Union of Press Workers (Sntp) denounced this Monday, August 1, that the mayor of the Campo Elías municipality of Mérida state, Simon Figueroaaccused a journalist when calling a radio station where he maintains a program.

“The mayor of the Campo Elías municipality in #MeridaSimón Figueroa, called the ‘Buenos Días’ program, broadcast by Ritmo Stereo 93.5FM, to accuse the journalist Paul Villa to pay people to denounce the social problems reported in the space».

The Sntp rejected this type of action by “public officials (who) try to discredit the work of journalists who work to make the demands of citizens visible.”

In another tweet they said that Figueroa also pointed out to the social communicator that he had a campaign once morest two other Chavista mayors of that entity, in western Venezuela. The union appointed the mayors of Libertador, Jesús Varela, and Arón Araque of the Sucre municipality.

The Sntp also on its Twitter account announced its support for the result of the LVI Secretariat of the National College of Journalists of Venezuelawhich decided to make an appeal to the Public Ministry to ask it to combat the illegal exercise of journalism in Venezuela, as it does with other professions.

They said that they will be once morest any attempt to reform the Law on the Exercise of Journalism in Venezuela, following the decision of the National Assembly with a Chavista majority to set up working groups to reform the legal instrument and the Code of Ethics for Journalists.

The Sntp “rejects any reform to the Exercise Law that threatens professionalization, independence and adherence to ethics,” they expressed this Sunday, July 31.
