Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt safely cleared the first cup hurdle in newcomer Mario Götze’s competitive debut. Coach Oliver Glasner’s team scored a comfortable 4-0 (2-0) in the first round of the DFB Cup on Monday evening at second division promoted 1. FC Magdeburg.
Last year Glasner lost his first competitive Eintracht game in the cup at third division SV Waldhof Mannheim, but this year Frankfurt celebrated a superior first-round victory.
Daichi Kamada (4th minute) shot the German first division team into the lead. Two minutes later, goalkeeper Kevin Trapp prevented the equalizer with a parried penalty kick. Jesper Lindström (31st), once more Kamada (59th) and Lucas Alario (90th) made everything clear for Eintracht.
Schmid initiated Bremen’s victory
Bundesliga promoted SV Werder Bremen solved their first round task in the DFB Cup on Monday with a little effort thanks to a goal by Romano Schmid. The Hanseatic League won 2-1 (1-0) at fourth division side Energie Cottbus.
Austria’s Schmid scored the half-time lead in the 43rd minute, helping Werder prevent a first-round out like the one that happened once morest Osnabrück a year ago. Marco Friedl also played through at Werder.
Union Berlin continues to tremble
