Russell believes law changes at Spa will be in the interest of Mercedes

Mercedes driver George Russell has hinted that his team will benefit from technical modifications that will see the light of day from the Belgian Grand Prix following the summer break of the 2022 season of the Formula One World Championship.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) will tighten the rules on the flexibility of the car floor from the beginning of the second half of the season, and this is the area that Ferrari and Red Bull teams exploited and gave them an advantage in the first 13 races.

On the other hand, the Mercedes team suffered from the problem of rebounds and this negatively affected their performance compared to the two leading teams, but in recent races the performance has become better, during which Russell’s teammate Lewis Hamilton managed to climb to the podium 5 times.

Russell qualified first for the Hungarian grid, but finished third behind Hamilton and race winner Max Verstappen.

The Briton believes that his team will benefit from the new amendments to the laws, indicating that they have adhered to what was stated in them from the start.

“It’s no secret that we’re ahead as a team and we’re doing better now than we did at the start of the season, we used to finish the race a minute or so behind them, now 10 seconds or less, which is good,” said Russell.

He continued, “The Spa race will be great, the technical adjustments will mix the cards, and we as a team have the confidence and self-belief that we are doing right and going according to plan.”

He added: “There is no doubt that Ferrari and Red Bull have the strength and speed and reaching them is difficult, but not impossible, because every car is different from the other.”

He continued, “The modifications will bring us closer, but they will not help them, and we will wait and see what happens.”
