“A king dead, king set” goes the popular adage, although it seems that in the case of Darío Gómez, finding who occupied the throne of the King of spite will not be so easy.
With the death of last Tuesday, July 26, the genre of popular music lost its great reference, the mentor of the movement and the mirror that the new artists had as an example to follow their path, as expressed by John Alex Castaño.
Along with Charrito Negro and Luis Alberto Posada, Darío Gómez joined what became known as the Tripleta del despise, which took the songs of despair from the canteens and took them to the stadiums, coliseums and theaters.
“It will not be easy to get that new idol and King of spite, because Darío had conditions such as being an entrepreneur, producer, composer and performer at the same time and it is not easy to find someone in the musical world with those characteristics”, comments Hernán Darío Usquiano , music historian and show host The Dance Libraryfrom Telemedellin.
In the same sense, Bera, the popular music singer, daughter of the popular Pistolita, the interpreter of the requinto in the Los Legendarios group, who accompanied Darío Gómez in his presentations and recordings, thinks.
“Darío will never have a successor, ever,” says the artist, who is known as the Queen of spite, a nickname that Darío himself gave her.
For her, the deceased artist is incomparable because the King of spite stood out as well as a musician for his “simplicity and for his way of reaching the public, so I don’t see a successor.”
of the new generation
During the tribute last Thursday at the Yesid Santos Coliseum, where Darío Gómez was exposed in a burning chamber, some relatives of the artist publicly affirmed that Yeison Jiménez, who sang at the event, was the one called to succeed him.
Regarding the power in the middle that has names like Pipe Bueno, Paola Jara, Arelys Henao, Yeison Jiménez, John Alex Castaño or Alzate, among others, as possible successors of the King of spite, Hernán Darío Usquiano believes that the great merit of that generation is that they brought popular music to the youth. “They are extremely popular for the genre, but they are not going to catch up with Darío Gómez, because he has an advantage of 46 years of successes, one following another.”
In his opinion, the one that can come closest to that label is Pipe Daza, who was very supported at the time by Darío Gómez, “but if we see it from the family side, the closest one might be Hernán Gómez, who on stage has an incredible resemblance to Darío Gómez”.
Beyond that, the throne of Darío Gómez may or may not be occupied by one of his colleagues, what is clear is that in the popular musician there is much to choose from, starting with Charrito Negro and Luis Alberto Posada, passing through women like Arelys Henao, Francy or Paola Jara, and the entire generation of new musicians who were trained under the shadow of the King of spite.
The future of the legendary
Although there is no clarity regarding the future of the Los Legendarios group, which always accompanied Darío Gómez on stage and in the studios, its members hope to be able to move forward.
Neither Olga Lucía Arcila, ex-wife of Darío Gómez and his manager, nor the children of the deceased musician have confirmed whether the group will continue and look for a vocalist.
“There are several of Darío’s brothers who sing and who are physically similar to him and who sing in a similar way,” says Bera.
