Who to contact for help
– Our lovely ladies are more accustomed and easier to come to an appointment with a gynecologist than with a urologist. And it will be right! – explains the doctor Nelly Makarova. – The doctor will ask a series of questions for an obstetric and gynecological history – regarding medications taken, lifestyle, bad habits, and so on. Perhaps, following the tests and ultrasound, you will need to consult a urologist.
Treatment for incontinence can be surgical or conservative (with or without medication). The latter is highly effective in mild forms of urinary incontinence.
– Non-drug methods are recommended for absolutely all patients with all types of urinary incontinence, the expert says. – This is a lifestyle change – weight loss, moderate physical activity, smoking cessation and caffeine intake, as well as correction of concomitant somatic pathology (lung diseases, intestines, diabetes mellitus, etc.).
It is also recommended to perform special exercises – these are training of the bladder and pelvic floor muscles.
How to exercise your bladder
“The training consists in following a pre-established urination plan, that is, you need to urinate at certain intervals,” says Nelly Makarova. – Once every 15-20 days, the interval is increased by 30 minutes. The goal is to bring the interval up to 3-3.5 hours.
Exercises for the pelvic muscles
– efficient and exercises on the Kegel system, Atabekov, Yunusovas well as exercises using the biofeedback method (BOS-therapy), says the doctor. – Electrodes are attached to the abdomen, a special sensor is inserted into the vagina. After that, the patient performs special exercises for 20-30 minutes to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic diaphragm. The sensor determines the force of muscle contraction, the data is transmitted to the computer. So you can regulate the correctness of the exercise). The task when performing these exercises is to acquire the ability to contract special muscle groups under independent control.
For the prevention of incontinence it is also recommended to observe the water regime – drink 1500-2000 ml of fluid per day, empty the bladder in a timely manner, not allowing it to overstretch, lead an active lifestyle and visit a gynecologist at least once a year.
