American basketball player Bill Russell has died at the age of 89. He holds the National Basketball Association (NBA) record for most titles. The athlete became one of the first black NBA players, later – the first black coach in the league.
“Bill Russell, the most decorated player in the history of American sports, passed away peacefully today at the age of 88 in the presence of his wife Janine,” Bill Russell’s official Twitter account said in a statement.
Throughout his sports career, Bill Russell played as a center for the Boston Celtics NBA team. The basketball player became the NBA champion 11 times, was recognized as the most valuable player in the NBA five times, took part in the All-Star Game 12 times. He also won gold at the 1956 Summer Olympics while captaining Team USA.
