Short message communication services provided by China’s Beidou-3 (BDS-3) navigation satellite system have shifted from industrial to public applications, according to a conference held in Beijing on Saturday.

A series of results related to BDS-3 short message communication services were presented at the conference, including new features on mobile phones and satellite-to-ground technology solutions.

Short message communication services are unique to BDS and set it apart from other global navigation satellite systems. Services cover China and neighboring regions and countries. They are characterized by low cost, wide coverage and high reliability.

Short message services can effectively supplement the land mobile communication network and meet the needs of emergency communication and search and rescue work in areas not covered by the land network.

These services can be actively used to protect people’s lives, assist in disaster relief and mitigation, field relief, sea fishing, transportation and border patrol, said Yan Zhe, director Deputy General of China Northern Industrial Group Co., Ltd.
