  • The US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the abortion law article caused an international outcry.

  • Not least from royals and politicians.

  • Now the arch-conservative Republican Samuel Alito ridiculed his colleagues during a speech in Rome and earned applause and laughter from the audience.

“In the past few weeks, I have had the privilege of writing what is perhaps the only Supreme Court decision in the history of this institution that has been criticized by a slew of foreign leaders who have felt comfortable commenting on American law,” said Samuel Alito in a speech regarding a week ago in Rome, which has now been published on the website of the US University of Notre Dame.

According to Alito, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was one of the critics. But he finally paid “the price”, the judge continued to mock and reaped laughter from the audience. Alito also named Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and France’s President Emmanuel Macron. Again and once more he got applause from the audience. Alito is a hardliner and advocate for the religious right on the Supreme Court. He was nominated by George W. Bush and wrote the abortion rights decision.

Prince Harry’s speech hurt him

The speech given by Prince Harry, who lives in the United States, to the United Nations really hurt him, the 72-year-old said in a mocking tone. He accused the prince of comparing the decision to have an abortion with the war in Ukraine. Harry spoke in New York of the “revocation of constitutional rights in the United States” in a list of examples of attacks on democracy. He also mentioned the Russian war of aggression.

“Well, despite this temptation, I will not discuss cases from other countries,” Alito said. He announced that he wanted to “win the fight to protect religious freedom in an increasingly secular society”. At the end of June, the Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion in the USA with its ultra-conservative majority. In his speech, Alito did not explicitly say which judgment he was talking regarding and simply called it “the decision whose name must not be mentioned”. But it was clear which decision he was referring to.
