Rocket Mortgage Classic: Tony Finau continues and takes the lead in Detroit

Something like this hasn’t happened since 2018 on the PGA Tour, when Dustin Johnson won the St Jude Classic before taking charge the following week at the US Open. Winner of the 3M Open last Sunday, Tony Finau achieved the same performance on Thursday, taking the lead in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

In Detroit, the American positioned himself for a second consecutive victory by returning a card of 64 (-8). The 16th player in the world had eight birdies for no bogey and even touched the 18 greens in regulations. A first for Finau, in 728 games played on the American circuit. He shares the lead in the tournament with Canadian rookie Taylor Pendrith, author of a single bogey (hole 18).

Four Europeans in the top 10

In 3rd place (66), there are four Americans with Webb Simpson, Cameron Champ, Michael Thompson and Lee Hodges. They are accompanied by the Englishman Matt Wallace, one of the four “Europeans” in the top 10 with the Swede Henrik Norlander, the German Stefan Jaeger and another Englishman, Callum Tarren, all three in 8th place with cards of 67.

On the French side, Paul Barjon misses his start to the tournament and is in 140th place (75), four strokes from the provisional cut. Three tournaments from the end of the regular season, the New Caledonian is in 158th place in the FedExCup. At more than 30 ranks therefore from a maintenance on the PGA Tour 2022-2023.
