Radio man, announcer, moderator, teacher and kindergarten teacher
Homesick singer Markus Stadelmann is so versatile
Markus Stadelmann is one of the founding members of Heimweh, the most successful male choir in Switzerland, which is presenting its latest album “Freiheit” these days. The Glarner singer is a man with many professions and vocations – and a family man.
Today, «Freiheit» is the sixth studio album by Heimweh, the most successful male choir in Switzerland. One of the founding members of the twelve-part hit formation is Markus Stadelmann (40) from Reichenburg SZ. But professional singing is just one of many of his activities – the native of Glarner can hardly be surpassed in terms of diversity.
In his main job, Stadelmann is a presenter at Radio Zürisee. He also teaches as a music teacher at the high school in Schwanden GL. And through his company Schnuri.ch he bundles his orders as an event presenter and spokesman for well-known customers such as Coop, Zweifel Pomy-Chips or Knorr. Recently he even experienced his practical test as a kindergarten teacher. “There was a staff shortage in my neighboring community, so I stepped in,” says Stadelmann. “And apparently I didn’t do my job that badly, because they have now included me in the deputy pool,” he says happily.
For him, the future was defined early on. «Pilot or engine driver never appealed to me. As a child I recorded the hit parade with the cassette recorder and commented on it.» He later wrote a school magazine with a colleague in Glarus and ended up with the “Jugendforum” of the newspaper “Südostschweiz”, “my first serious attempt at journalism”.
Voice broke at twelve
At the same time, following graduating from high school, he graduated from the University of Education. At the same time, his singing career developed steadily. “My voice broke at the age of twelve and I was in demand as a bass in choirs from an early age.” His mentor and trainer was the conductor Kurt Müller Klusman (62), who introduced him to classical music early on through the Glarner Chamber Choir. He first caught fire for the really big stages in 2001, when he was allowed to be a backing vocalist at “Art on Ice” in Zurich’s Hallenstadion, “a trend-setting experience”.
Stadelmann didn’t need any hobbies on his busy days. «I don’t need a balance to my work, because it fills me up completely with its diversity.» Despite this, he still plays volleyball at Näfels, also plays theater with friends and is an ambassador for the Association for the Promotion of Children with Rare Diseases (KMSK).
“And I’m a big family man, through and through,” he enthuses. “My loved ones must never be neglected. When I present the morning show on the radio, I want to be at their lunch table by twelve at the latest. Or sometimes I take them with me over the weekend when we’re touring with ‘homesickness’.” And that will soon be the case more often.
