South Sinai has been popular with Israeli tourists for years. They can go without a visa, which does not apply to mainland Egypt.
Tourism to Egypt has slowed due to travel restrictions during the pandemic, but it is improving.
The Israel Airports Authority reported that 1.4 million Israelis crossed into Sinai by cars in 2019. The authority oversees the Taba crossing in partnership with Egypt.
The authority added that more than 330,000 Israeli tourists came to Egypt this year until June 1.
Traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt. In January, at least 16 people were killed and 18 others injured when a minibus collided with a large public transport bus in Sinai.
An Egyptian government statistics agency said 7,101 people were killed in traffic accidents last year.
