The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed on Wednesday that a total of 745 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the country as of Tuesday.
The health agency said in an update that confirmed cases include 346 in Quebec, 326 in Ontario, 58 in British Columbia, twelve in Alberta, two in Saskatchewan and one in the Yukon.
The update also said that over 99% are male and their median age is 36.
Like other international cases, the majority of them had intimate sexual contact with other men, Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam said in a press release.
According to her, the government has deployed more than 70,000 doses of Imvamune vaccines and continues to work actively to manage public health responses.
The government is also providing treatment for case management, as well as efforts to secure future domestic supplies of vaccines and therapeutics, Tam continued.
Monkeypox is a viral disease that can be spread from person to person through close contact, including sexual contact, with the skin, body fluids, mucous surfaces, and contaminated objects of an infected person, such as sex toys, or by sharing personal items, such as clothing, linens, bedding, towels, toothbrushes and utensils, according to PHAC.
