India drank methanol instead of alcohol: 38 dead, 51 sick
27 Jul. Archyde.com The tragic progress of the smuggling of methanol, a highly toxic and forbidden alcoholic beverage following being misunderstood as a substitute for spirits, in western India’s Gujarat state, said another 10 deaths were reported. This brings the cumulative death toll to 38.

The incident happened following it was reported that 51 severe alcohol poisoning patients were admitted to Ahmedabad and Bodha district hospitals. Some died overnight. Causing the police to mobilize to find the source of the illegal liquor and have been able to arrest 6 people involved.
Asoke Kumar Yadav, one of the investigators, said all the patients drank alcohol containing methanol. It was found to be concentrated methanol that, besides being fatal, was virtually undiluted. Usually used only in thinners, fuels, pesticides, antifreeze, etc. The alcohol used in spirits is ethanol.
