Diabetes: Intermittent fasting improves metabolism

After eating in a 10-hour window for three weeks, the adults’ fasting blood sugar improved. In addition, the time that her blood sugar was in the normal range was almost three hours longer than before. There was also a slight weight loss. The time the participants ate was reduced from 13.4 to 9.1 hours on average.

With time-restricted eating, 24-hour glucose levels were better mainly due to lower blood glucose at night: time in the normal range increased from 12.2 to 15.1 hours. Hypoglycaemia did not occur more frequently due to the time-restricted eating.

According to the researchers, intermittent fasting, which limits food intake to 10 hours, is a safe, effective and easily implemented lifestyle change for adults with type 2 diabetes: In modern society, food is always available and many people have an irregular day -Night rhythm with an extended food intake that is likely to cause the overnight fast to fall short. This contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes, one of the most common metabolic diseases worldwide.

How exactly the improvement in blood sugar levels came regarding is still unknown, because insulin sensitivity, energy supply in the muscles and liver fat content had not changed as a result of intermittent fasting.
