Wildfires ravage California; state of emergency

Wildfires are ravaging California. The flames came close to Yosemite National Park’s famous giant sequoia trees. Thousands of people have been evacuated from here. The wildfires in central California come as parts of the United States continue to grapple with extreme heat.

A wildfire that started Friday near the town of Midipines in Mariposa County has spread to more areas. The fire is getting bigger as sparks fly into the dry summer trees. By Sunday, 52 square kilometers of forest had been burnt.

6,000 people living near the Sierra Nevada foothills were evacuated. About 10 houses were burnt. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Mariposa. Temperatures have soared in many parts of the US due to the heat wave.
