Netflix is regarding to make an interesting change to iOS et iPadOS. Indeed, the service the streaming will soon allow iPhone and iPad users to take out a subscription via l’application… somehow. Indeed, the process will not be 100% integrated into it, referring only to a page externe. This will allow the platform to enjoy a significant advantage: escape app store commission.
Netflix pulls out of App Store commission
Suggest a subscription or purchases in-apps on the App Store or the Play Store presents a significant financial problem for developers: a commission. Taken on each sale, it logically causes application creators to lose money. However, things are starting to change.
Indeed, Apple’s ecosystem is beginning to painfully open up, following multiple legal constraints now forcing it to offer an alternative means of payment on its application store. iOS 15.5 thus revealed that the Apple firm was working on a payment system outside the App Store. The latter aims to redirect users of an application to an external link, thus leaving the possibility of redirecting to an external store.
In detail, we learned that these new directives only concerned Reader appsi.e. applications offering “ purchased or subscription content such as magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music or video”. As you will have understood, Netflix now redirects users wishing to subscribe from its iOS and iPadOS applications to the subscription web page.
Indeed, the “Subscribe” button appears on the Netflix application and informs that they will be redirected to an external website, emphasizing in passing that Apple will no longer be held responsible for the transaction carried out, but also subscription management.
In detail, the informational message (translated from English) is as follows: “Any accounts or purchases made outside of this application will be managed by the developer ‘Netflix’. Your App Store account, stored payment methods, and related features, such as subscription management and refund requests, will not be available. Apple is not responsible for the privacy or security of any transactions with this developer.
As a reminder, Netflix no longer allowed subscriptions from its application since 2018, in particular to avoid suffering the 30% commission applied by Apple on subscriptions (reduced to 15% for recurring subscriptions following one year).
