The ‘beatbox’ gain worldwide fame with groups like ‘Berywam’. Walid Baali, artistically known as ‘Wawad’ was in w weekend to explain well what the ‘beatbox’ is all regarding and how they can recreate different sounds with their mouths and even imitate musical instruments.
The group does not have specific roles within the group, the different styles are rotated to sound in harmony, “There are four of us, but in the song there must always be a beat, the bass, the highs and the ‘scratch’”, commented ‘Wawad’.
These young French people use different techniques to create sounds that imitate musical compositions, those they cover or their original creations. “We looked at so many ways of how to produce a sound and create a whole set from each one we create. We divide the different types of sounds to be able to create a sonority as a whole and we add things to it or take it away as we see how it is emerging. Sometimes it’s easy but other times it can take a long time to create a new part”, he commented.
‘Berywam’ became known worldwide following his participation in the talent show, America’s Got Talent; but these four youngsters had already gained recognition in Europe and parts of Asia for their participation in versions of the same show in France, Saudi Arabia and Italy. “We really liked being in the United States, because the beatbox was born there and it was very exciting to be there to show that this is an art that requires a lot of work and commitment”, he added.
The French group has had the opportunity to meet one of the most famous groups in Latin America, Boca Sampling from Cuba. “We haven’t had the opportunity to meet other bands or to make presentations in Latin America, but we know that there is a very strong community of ‘beatbox’ in this part of the world and we know that we will soon cross paths with some of them.
