The Boston Red Sox are really on a very bad streak. After being humiliated by the Blue Jays last weekend, they are now 3-13 in their last 16 games.
And in a division as strong as the East of the American, such a sequence makes very hurt their chances of making the playoffs, despite the fact that there will be three teams drafted this year.
Clearly, that means the Red Sox need to start considering selling at the trade deadline. And among those who might move, there is one name that stands out: Xander Bogaerts.
The team’s star shortstop, who will likely use his option to get out of contract this winter, failed to make a long-term signing with Boston (and they aren’t close to a deal), and rather than risk losing him for nothing, the Red Sox might really trade him.
So Bogaerts’ days in Boston seem numbered one way or another. Despite everything, Bogaerts admits that he does not yet realize that he might really leave the team.
Bogaerts admits he tries not to be distracted by the noise around him, but he knows his future in Boston is in doubt. That said, he doesn’t fully realize that he might lose the only uniform he’s ever worn since the start of his career.
He doesn’t know if it will start on him to go inside the closer he gets to the end (whether in eight days or in the winter), but right now he’s focused on the Red Sox season.
It is clear that Bogaerts hopes to stay in Boston and that he would like to sign there long term, but he also wants to be paid his fair value. And it defends itself.
Recall that Bogaerts is far from the only Red Sox player who might be traded if they become sellers at the deadline. JD Martinez is another good example.
In short, the face of the Red Sox might change shortly, and Bogaerts, one of the faces of the franchise, might leave shortly. Will it happen in eight days or this winter? We will probably know soon.
