In his paper, reports RTBF, the journalist writes in particular that he is “happy that July 11 (Flemish Community holiday) is over”, that he is not proud to be Flemish, “any more than to be Belgian or Kortrijk. I don’t care: a person has to be born somewhere. Let’s say that I am lucky to be Belgian and live in the richest part of the country”, can we thus read.
He also describes the celebration of July 11, commemoration of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, of “myth, fable, fairy tale”: “I have nothing to do with the Flemish identity. No question of carrying flags of a lion”, insists Kurt Vandemaele.
What was his surprise when on July 21, a national holiday, his garden was invaded by Flemish nationalist flags: “It was not pleasant to see”, he describes. “People are sneaking onto my property anonymously and trying to tell me in unfriendly ways that they can’t stand what I’m saying.”
Despite a complaint, the Kortrijk police considered that the facts were not “serious” enough for an investigation to be opened.
