Turkish auto industry grows despite supply chain bottlenecks

The auto industry in Turkey achieved a growth of 2% during the first half of this year, according to a statement by the Automobile Manufacturers Association of Turkey.

The statement indicated that the period between January and June 2022 witnessed the manufacture of 649,311 cars, an increase of 2% compared to the same period last year, despite the supply chain crisis.

The repercussions of the global supply chain crisis extended to the energy and auto sectors, threatening new price increases globally.

According to the data, the production of passenger cars decreased by 8% during the mentioned period, to reach 382 thousand 947 cars.

The production of commercial vehicles increased by 19% to 266,364 vehicles, while the rate of increase was 26% in heavy commercial vehicles, and 18% in light commercial vehicles.

Looking at averages for the past 10 years, the total market increased by 3%, and the passenger car market by 4% in the January-June period of this year.

While the heavy commercial vehicle market increased by 10%, while the light commercial vehicle market was parallel to the previous year. In this period, the share of domestic vehicles was 39 percent in car sales and 59 percent in light commercial vehicles.

In a related context, the share of the automobile sector in the total Turkish exports was 12.2%.

Turkish car exports grew by 1.2% during the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2021.

Turkey’s exports of cars

In general, the value of exports of the automotive sector in Turkey increased to 2.8 billion dollars last June.

A statement by the Turkish Automobile Exporters Association said, earlier, that the sector’s exports came in second place among the country’s largest exports.

Car exports increased in June by 17.9% compared to the same month last year, 2021.

The sector’s exports during the first half of this year amounted to $15.3 billion, with an average of $2.55 billion per month, an increase of 6.1 percent year on year.
