Monkeypox … WHO declares a global emergency

On Saturday, the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a “global emergency”, launching the highest level of alert, in an attempt to contain the outbreak of the disease that has so far infected regarding 17,000 people in 74 countries.

“I have decided to declare a health emergency with an international dimension” to confront monkeypox, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

He explained that “the risk in the world is relatively moderate, with the exception of Europe, where it is considered high,” adding: “We can control monkeypox and stop its spread, using available means.”

The World Health Organization stressed the need for “coordinated international interaction, launching funding, and concerted global efforts to cooperate in the exchange of vaccines and treatment.”

WHO’s description of monkeypox as a “public health emergency of international concern” aims to raise the alarm that there is a need for coordinated international interaction and might trigger global funding and efforts to cooperate in the exchange of vaccines and treatment.
