Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye is elected to the presidency of the East African Community (EAC), this Friday, July 22, during a summit of heads of member states held in Arusha in the United Republic of Tanzania. from July 21 to 22, 2022. He succeeds his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta.

In his speech, following his election, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye promises to work for the improvement of the standard of living of the populations of the community through increased competitiveness, the growth of production, trade and the promotion of investments.

During his term, he wants the French language and Kiswahili to be used as the official languages ​​of the community, in addition to English.

Regarding peace and security in the region, President Ndayishimiye insists on the need to promote peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo: “We will ensure that our new member state recovers and goes a long way towards stability and development, including the implementation of the decisions taken at the recent conclave in Nairobi.”

It calls on EAC Member States to work together to prevent and manage conflicts as well as ensure good neighbourliness: “It is important to revitalize governance and implement decisions regarding peace and security in our region.”

The new head of the EAC suggests the involvement of the first ladies in the activities of the community. For him, young people and women can serve as a locomotive in the economic take-off and the strengthening of peace in the region.

It should be noted that four Heads of State took part in the Arusha Summit: Samia Suluhu Hassan from Tanzania, Evariste Ndayishimiye from Burundi, Uhuru Kenyatta from Kenya and Yoweri from Uganda. Other member states including Rwanda, DRC and South Sudan have sent representatives.
