Serbian star Novak Djokovic confirmed that he will join Spain’s Rafael Nadal, Swiss Roger Federer and Britain’s Andy Murray in the dream squad for Europe in the Laver Cup, which will bring together the former “big four” in one team.
The European Bjorn Borg team will face the John McEnroe World Team in the fifth edition of the event, which will be held at the “O2 Arena” in London from September 23-25, and Team Europe is looking to win for the fifth time in a row in the three-day event, which is named following Australian racket legend Rod Laver.
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic will appear in the Laver Cup for the first time since 2018, when it was held in Chicago.
“It’s the only competition where you can play in a team environment with the players you normally compete with, and to join Rafa, Roger and Andy – three of my biggest rivals of all time – it will be a truly unique match,” said Djokovic, the 21-times major winner.
The four players have dominated the men’s competition for nearly two decades, dominating 66 of 76 major tournaments, and winning all Wimbledon titles since 2003.
The two vacant seats in the European squad have not yet been announced to complete the allowed number of six, while the McEnroe team included Canadian Phyllis Auger-Aliassime, American Taylor Fritz and Argentine Diego Schwarzman so far.
“I don’t think I might have imagined having these four icons of the sport on one team together,” said former world number one Swede Borg.
“I know that they, like me, appreciate the importance of this moment and will be ready for it, our goal every year is to win, with Rafa, Roger, Andy and Novak in the team, I like our chances.”
