Nature is unleashed in the Bas-Saint-Laurent

Even if the tornado warning was lifted in Rimouski and in the Mont-Joli sector, violent storms caused damage in the province and several homes were without electricity early Thursday evening.

An agricultural building in Saint-Anaclet-de-Lessard, near Rimouski, suffered major damage. Part of the roofs were torn off by the wind.

Fortunately, no one was injured, but the owner told TVA Nouvelles that he had never witnessed bad weather of this intensity.

“At some point, we started not seeing much. There was a big gust and the roofs of the silos went upwind,” says Régis Hudon, owner of Ferme Hudon et Fils.

“We mightn’t do anything. It was windy and it was raining. We let it pass and then we saw what had fallen,” he adds.

Mr. Hudon expects to have to carry out major repairs on his property.

In Rimouski, many residents also noticed significant damage to their homes. Donald Girard, resident of Rimouski, said he was impressed by this meteorological phenomenon, which he even compared to a tornado.

“The trees bent (…) everything uprooted and everything flew back. Then it started to fall,” says Mr. Girard.

The latter admits to having been afraid for his house.

Strong gusts and hail were reported in several areas. Hydro-Quebec reported more than 30,000 power outages, especially in Estrie and central Quebec.

A severe thunderstorm watch was still in effect Thursday evening in the Rimouski wildlife reserve sector and the Mont-Joli sector.
