A woman contracts malaria in Belgium: yet she would not have traveled abroad!

Our colleagues from Standard report that a woman who had not traveled recently had contracted malaria.

The latter, originally from Steenokkerzeel near Zaventem airport, reportedly suffered seriously for several days.

According to the Flemish health agency “Zorg en Gezondheid”, the cause would be a mosquito which would have been transported from Africa.

The insect is not normally able to survive in our regions, which explains the extreme rarity of cases of malaria in Belgium.
