Jonathon Heyward nominated to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

American conductor Jonathon Heyward, 29, will take up his new role as Music Director Designate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 2022-23 season, before beginning his initial five-year term in September 2023. The young conductor will take the succession of Marin Alsop (2007-2021) and will become the 13th musical director of the BSO. He will be the only American currently at the head of one of the main orchestras of the United States. Jonathon Heyward was assistant conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, where he was mentored by Sir Mark Elder before becoming music director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra. In 2021 he made his debut with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the BBC Proms.
