Samsung President TM Roh officially took the floor to reveal the number of foldable smartphones sold in 2021. As a bonus, the person concerned even specifies the proportion of Flip and Fold sold.
The year 2021 was a small turning point in the history of foldable smartphones. Samsung, which dominates this segment, has managed to market two ever more successful models with more than interesting potential. On one side, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 embodied a pop and practical state of mind, which knew how to conquer the crowds.
On the other, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is intended for a more hybrid use and focused on productivity and comfort of use. But this time with a more robust appearance and a refined design. All at different prices. In any case, Samsung’s strategy seems to have hit the mark given the official figures published by the Korean brand.
A 300% increase
The president of the company, in the person of TM Roh, has indeed revealed the delivery volumes of the pair during the year 2021. In total, nearly 10 million Samsung foldable smartphones were delivered last year. An increase of 300% compared to 2020, underlines the boss of the group. Proof that this phone format is taking on a real scale.
Note that the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 were made official in August 2021. The 10 million units therefore probably include older generation models, without Samsung specifying how many. TM Roh, on the other hand, goes further regarding the proportion of Flip and Fold sold.
Of the 10 million, 70% of the models are Galaxy Z Flip, when 30% are logically Galaxy Z Fold. This difference can be explained by a relatively simple reason: the first named costs much less (1059 euros at its launch in France) than the second (1799 euros). Also, the uses differ.
A new vintage record?
At 1059 euros, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has even become more affordable than some ultra premium smartphones from Samsung, Apple or Oppo. Inevitably, this can arouse the curiosity of some and some who are used to investing substantial sums of money in telephones.
TM Roh s’attend « that this rapid growth continues ». August 10Samsung is expected to introduce its Galaxy Z Fold 4 et Galaxy Z Flip 4. If he manages to pull prices ever lower, the democratization of foldable smartphones might be reinforced. It will also be necessary to focus on strong advances to boost their attractiveness.
