According to reports, Erdogan said that Turkey has put forward the conditions for starting the process of “joining the treaty” between the two countries. If Sweden and Finland do not take the necessary measures to meet the conditions put forward by the Turkish side, the Turkish side will freeze the process of joining the NATO between the two countries.

Erdogan added, “We see that Sweden is not doing well in this regard”.

On May 18, Sweden and Finland ended their military non-alignment history and formally submitted their applications to join NATO to NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg. According to the regulations, NATO must “unanimously agree” on the premise of 30 member states to admit new members.

Since Sweden and Finland expressed their intention to apply for NATO membership, Turkey has clearly expressed its opposition. Turkey has repeatedly stressed that Finland and Sweden must stop supporting the PKK, the Syrian Kurdish armed “People’s Protection Units” and the “Gulen Movement” when they seek to join NATO, and lift restrictions on Turkey’s export of defense equipment.

On June 28, Turkey finally relented and agreed to support Sweden and Finland in joining NATO. The three countries signed a joint memorandum, emphasizing their commitment to “full support for threats to each other’s security.”

On July 5, Stoltenberg, Finnish Foreign Minister Haavisto and Swedish Foreign Minister Linde formally signed the protocol for the two countries to join NATO. Stoltenberg said Sweden and Finland would participate in NATO operations as “invited countries”.Return to Sohu, see more
