Rishi Sunak also won the third round of voting, while the moderate Tugendhat was eliminated. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Johnson defended his political legacy in Parliament.
In the race to succeed outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson there are only four candidates left. In a vote by the Conservatives ToryGroup, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Tom Tugendhat, who is considered moderate, retired in last place, as the responsible committee announced on Monday evening. On Wednesday evening, following further votes, only two applicants should be left. After that, the party members have the floor.
It should be clear on September 5 who will succeed Johnson as party leader and head of government. The ex-finance minister has so far been the favourite Rishi Sunak, which once more received the most votes in Monday’s vote. He and Secretary of State Liz Trusswho are also given good chances, withdrew their commitment to a planned TV debate on Monday, whereupon the broadcaster Sky News canceled the entire event. Also in the running are Secretary of State for Trade Penny Mordaunt and MP Kemi Badenoch.

Johnson defends term
Outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, meanwhile, has defended his political legacy ahead of a confidence vote in Parliament. Johnson said on Monday in the London House of Commons that he had completed Brexit and had made the right decisions on the big issues.
In view of the British support of the Ukraine once morest the Russian war of aggression, he said: “If it is true that I am currently more popular on the streets of Kyiv than in (London borough) Kensington, it is because of the courage and foresight of this government to have been the first European country that delivered weapons.”
Johnson, who announced his resignation two weeks ago under pressure from a number of party colleagues, blamed the opposition for the vote of confidence in his government, which was scheduled for Monday evening. However, Speaker Lindsay Hoyle reminded him that the government itself scheduled the vote following being criticized for rejecting an opposition no-confidence motion.
It was considered certain that the government would win the vote. In the event of a defeat, an early new election would be inevitable – but even Johnson’s opponents in the Tory party want to avoid that at all costs at the moment due to poor poll numbers
