Chennai is known as the chess capital of India. Now, the city is unexpectedly going to host the 44th edition of the FIDE – Fédération Internationale des Échecs Chess Olympiad. The capital city of Tamil Nadu is gearing up in various ways to coincide with the Chess Olympiad. As part of that, the government has shocked people by painting the Napier Bridge in Chennai like a chess board. It goes without saying that the painting on the bridge is a masterpiece. Now many people travel across the bridge just to see it.
The incident went viral following Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change & Forests, Government of Tamil Nadu, shared a video of the black and white ‘chess board’ bridge on social media. Chennai, the chess capital of India, is all set to host the 2022 Chess Olympiad. The iconic Napier Bridge is decorated like a chess board,” she shared the video by tweeting. On June 15, Indian superstar Rajinikanth shared the official teaser of Chess Olympiad on Twitter.
The music of the teaser is composed by Oscar winning music composer AR Rahman. Soon following, the video of the chess board bridge went viral and left netizens in awe. The Tamil Nadu government has prepared elaborate plans to make the event memorable and successful. Both the teaser and the chessboard painting on the bridge are part of an effort to attract people from all over the world.

FIDE Chess Olympiad -2022
Mahabalipuram is hosting FIDE Chess Olympiad-2022, the world’s most famous chess event. The venues for the matches, which will be held from July 28 to August 10, are the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Mahabalipute. India is hosting the Chess Olympiad for the first time in 100 years. More than 2000 chess players from different countries of the world are participating in Chess Olympiad. With 187 men’s teams and 162 women’s teams, the tournament is set to set an all-time record for the number of teams.
The 2022 Chess Olympiad, which was supposed to be held in Russia, was shifted to India due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The All India Chess Federation was the first to volunteer to the International Chess Federation, which was looking for another venue instead of Russia. Then moving things into high gear, on June 9, Chess Olympiad unveiled the logo and mascot ‘Thambi’ for the 44th edition.

On June 19, the Chess Olympiad Torch, handed over by International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich, began its journey to various cities in India, led by chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Passing through 74 cities of the country, the Chess Olympiad torch reached the Mahabalipuram venue on July 27 and the competition will begin on July 28.
