Dr. Alexandra Salvatori reported that for four weeks they have received patients at the Uyapar Hospital in Puerto Ordaz with intestinal obstructions.
Ascariasis is a parasitic infection, one of the most frequent that occurs in humans. In recent weeks, some specialists in Bolívar state have expressed concern through social networks regarding the number of cases with complications that reach emergency rooms.
Alexandra Salvatori, a childcare pediatrician, explained that a child can become infected with ascariasis through the ingestion of food or water contaminated with embryonated eggs.
The specialist, attached to the pediatric service of the Uyapar Hospital in Puerto Ordaz, described that these “little animals” enter through the digestive tract and in the small intestine the larva is formed during the maturation period, penetrating the intestinal mucosa through blood circulation. and passes to the liver, from there to the lungs, then it reaches the tracheobronchial tree, when it reaches the throat it is swallowed and goes down to the gastrointestinal system, finally in the small intestine the adult worms are formed.
Although it is a frequent infection, the graduate of the Universidad de Oriente, assured that for four weeks they have registered cases in school age with complications that have required surgical intervention for intestinal obstruction, this due to the number of roundworms.
“It is the great concern that we pediatricians are having, other specialists have published from the central areas of the country such as Caracas and Valencia who have this concern regarding cases of intestinal obstruction due to roundworms,” Dr. Salvatori told FIRST.
Intestinal obstruction can be partial or complete, the first does not require going to the operating room, he is only hospitalized to receive medical treatment, on the other hand, the second does require surgery because the number of worms that have passed to adults and that live in the intestines of the child is immense, preventing the patient from being able to evacuate or eat food as it causes nausea and vomiting.
Symptoms
Ascariasis is asymptomatic or in some cases nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms: vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, Salvatori said.
Given this, the specialist made a series of recommendations for parents, since as the rainy season increases they have to increase hygiene measures at home.
“What is the great limitation in Ciudad Guayana? The scarcity of drinking water”, questioned Salvatori.
The storage of water must be in the best possible conditions with covered containers, if it is for consumption, it is recommended 5 to 10 minutes of effective boiling so that it can be consumed.
Properly washing food and hands are part of the indications.
On the other hand, the immunological factor is another point that worries doctors, “if they are not well nourished, children do not have good defenses, they cannot act well once morest an infection,” he concluded.
Water purification
Regarding the conditions of piped water, the new president of Hidrobolívar, Daniel Valenzuela, specified that the purification system is in normal conditions.
“There are times of rain and when the river rises, the turbidity of the water increases, but bacteriologically we are above the norm,” he added.
He explained that the aqueducts have the dosages of sulfate, chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite among the important chemicals, only in the purchase there is talk of one hundred thousand dollars per month that includes the transfer and chemical substances, these expenses are borne by the Government of Bolívar state , Hydrology and the Ministry of Water.
