Once is not custom, WABetaInfo alerts us to a major novelty that might soon arrive on the WhatsApp application. This concerns the ability to delete a message following sending it, currently only available up to one hour, eight minutes and sixteen seconds following receipt. A deadline that has just passed two days and twelve hourss, at least for some users only.
Indeed, as often only those who are enrolled in the WhatsApp beta test program via TestFlight are concerned. However, the program is for the moment complete so that no new guest is accepted for the moment. The waiting list is also still very long to participate. The rest of Internet users will therefore have to wait for the functionality to be confirmed and then deployed in the final version, which should probably take several days.
A security risk?
For the moment, this improvement is therefore confined to a limited selection of accounts and has not yet aroused strong reactions. Nevertheless, Apple has with iOS 16 announced that its own iMessages may also be deleted up to fifteen minutes following sending. Although this duration is less than that on which WhatsApp advances, public opinion quickly became concerned.
Indeed, some stalkers The unscrupulous might take advantage of this to annoy more potential victims with a previously unavailable dream tool. As we explained previously, a criminal can for example use it to spam his target with unwelcome pornographic pictures before deleting them to make their traces disappear. Other scenarios are to be discovered in our dedicated dossier on the subject, published in mid-June.
Check if my mobile is eligible
If you are part of the WhatsApp beta test program, you can already check if your app offers this change. To do this, it’s simple: you just have to write to one of your contacts, then try to delete the content in question following an hour and a quarter. If the option “delete for all” pops up once more, so bingo. Otherwise, it’s only a matter of time before the option is available to you: consider updating WhatsApp manually if necessary.
Recently, WhatsApp also allowed you to choose any emoji to react to a message.
