Construction holidays with COVID in the blind spot

With less than two weeks to the construction holiday, many are preparing for their summer activities, but are watching out of the corner of their eye for the seventh wave of COVID hitting the province.

The strategic medical advisor for public health, Dr. Marie-France Raynault, declared in a press briefing on Thursday that the situation “is not dramatic as during the first wave”.

“It is true that there is a lot of contamination, but if we look at the serious complications of COVID, currently, in intensive care, the situation is really under control,” she said.

However, community transmission remains very strong since the BA.5 variant is extremely contagious.

Public health has therefore invited vacationers to take basic precautions, while recalling what it means by “living well with COVID”.

“Living with the virus means living normally, but taking basic precautions, which fit well into everyday life. And I think that can have an effect on transmission,” said Dr. Raynault.

Many Quebecers are already choosing to keep a mask handy to put on if they feel the need.

“We took the metro earlier. Me, I made the choice to wear the mask”, admitted a woman met by TVA Nouvelles in the Old Port of Montreal.

Others are aware that they should self-isolate as soon as symptoms appear.

“When they have symptoms, even if it’s light, it’s to stay at home,” said another woman crossed at the Old Port.

By always respecting basic sanitary measures, workers will therefore be able to take full advantage of their holidays and live with COVID, despite the seventh wave, assured Dr. Raynault.
