An intruder discovered in one of the first images of the James-Webb telescope


A remarkable instrument

Striking images were presented to the general public at the inauguration of the James-Webb Space Telescope. The precision and power of this instrument have been demonstrated with these shots. Not only does the equipment make it possible to observe clearly, but it can also go much further than Hubble. In fact, Webb’s cameras are able to observe in infrared according to different parameters.

Southern Ring Nebula

One of the telescope’s first targets was the Southern Ring Nebula. This celestial object is made up of end-of-life stars that are emitting huge amounts of gas. It is precisely the mid-infrared that has allowed scientists to observe this complex binary system. A brighter star is at a younger stage in its evolution and might eventually produce its own planetary nebula when it reaches the end of its life.

This crystal clear image revealed an intruder. By paying attention to the left part of the photo, we can see a thin blue line. The device is so powerful that it can make objects visible despite the presence of cosmic dust. This line is not part of the nebula: it is a galaxy. In fact, scientists know almost nothing regarding this object.
