Video on the police response to Uvalde: “they should have done something”

The police who appear, in a video made public on Tuesday, inactive during the killer opens fire in the primary school of Uvalde should have moved, according to André Durocher, retired inspector of the SPVM.

“Either they chicken out or they lack training, but what is certain is that the intervention was not appropriate. They should have done something,” he said in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

The retired inspector also finds the inaction of the police officers worrying despite their large numbers.

“It seems that the more staff they have, the less they act,” he laments.

He gives as an example one of the last scenes of the video in which more than a dozen heavily armed police officers are gathered and one of them puts on hand sanitizer or another consults his phone.

He also criticizes the work of the policeman who was in the center of the video and who seemed to be responsible for the intervention.

“What is clear is that he doesn’t seem to be in control of much. When you look at it, it acts as a spectator. I find it sad,” says Mr. Durocher.

The latter is of the opinion that if the video had instead shown police officers on alert trying to intervene, the parents of the deceased children might “at the limit” forgive them.

He also points out that the police were heavily armed.

“But there, really, when you look, it’s not an armament fault. I mean, it would be the envy of the soldiers in Ukraine the armament they have, ”says the retired inspector.

Seeing these images that “chill the blood”, André Durocher can not help but have a thought for the parents.

“It’s a bit worrying, and I’m thinking of the parents in there who see that and who say my child might have been saved,” said Mr. Durocher.
