Gnonto to England? When the Italian lifted the league trophy following the last Super League round on May 22, it was impossible. Everything is different now – because Gnonto made a sensational debut for the A-Nati in June.
But first things first. Since Brexit, a complicated point system has governed whether an English club can get a work permit for a foreign player. After the season with FCZ, Gnonto did not come close to achieving the required 15 points. Among other things, because the English only classify the Super League as a fourth-class league and Zurich did not play in Europe.
Score doubled in one fell swoop
With his 9 points, Gnonto failed even at the minimum of 10, with which an English club might have applied for an exemption for him as an Under-21 player.
But now Gnonto has played four times in the Nations League. Serious fights for a world-class national team are richly rewarded in the Brexit system! Because he was used in 13.7% of Italian competitive games in the 24-month period under review and because the world rankings (Italy ranked 7th) is a significant factor, Gnonto conceded an additional 9 points in one fell swoop.
The green Brexit light is welcome news for FCZ, as the English clubs are swimming in money and it would be easy even for a relegated club like Leeds to pay the transfer fee of at least 10 million demanded by President Ancillo Canepa.
