The Margarita Venezuelan American Center (Cevamar), in collaboration with IFISA, carried out a webinar with the journalists Luis Carlos Diaz and Ana Carolina Arias under the program Next Generation of Journalists.
The webinar was a collaboration between Luis Carlos Díaz, cyberactivist, facilitator of digital issues, human rights defender and president of the Internet Society Venezuela; and Ana Carolina Arias, correspondent for national media and representative of the Institute of Press and Society of Venezuela.
Díaz recalled the journalistic expression “I have a piece of information”. He defined this as a “piece of information that needs to be processed, contextualized, in order to build a story, but when we talk regarding data journalism it is taken to another level, because we can go from one piece of data to a mass of data.”
He added that “when we talk regarding data journalism, we talk regarding evolution in the exercise of journalism, using tools that are at hand.”
He commented that data can be mines of information and if you don’t have it, you have to look for it and work as a team.
Research
Arias explained that data journalism has evolved from research, “it is not just looking for a figure, a testimony, it is entering the element that can give rise to breaking down the impact of a situation in a community or even a country.”
He explained that it is a discipline that incorporates different fields such as computer science, programming, engineering, statistics, design, among others.
The next session of Next Generation of Journalists It will be on Thursday, July 14, starting at 3:00 pm, with journalists Jennifer Hrastoviak and Lisbeth Miquilena.
