Jamaica’s women’s football team qualified for the world…thanks to Bob Marley’s daughter

The Reggae Girlz qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Jamaicans beat the Haiti national team 4-0. This is the second time in a row that Jamaica has taken part in the World Cup. A feat achieved thanks to the help of Cedella Marley, Bob’s eldest daughter, who helped the team following the removal of state subsidies.

On July 11, 2022, at the BBVA stadium in Monterrey, Mexico, the Reggae Girlz dominated the match once morest the team from Haiti to win 4-0.

Captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, the country’s top scorer, scored twice. Her teammates Trudy Carter and Drew Spencer scored the final two goals.

Despite the efforts of the Haitians, Melchie Dumornay and Roselord Borgella narrowly missed their chances. The Reggae Girlz were able to keep the pressure on.

We knew it would be difficult but we played as a close team and got the job done.

The win sends the Jamaicans straight to the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. This is a second consecutive qualification for Jamaica.

Jamaica is one of the 15 teams already qualified: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Sweden, Spain, France, Denmark, United States, Canada and Costa Rica. There are 17 places left to complete the poster.

In 2010, the Football Federation of Jamaica stopped subsidizing women’s football. In 2014, Cedella Marley, Bob’s eldest daughter, became the Reggae Girlz ambassador. Through the Marley Foundation, she found sponsors. Stephen and Damian Marley compose the song “Strike Hard” to raise funds.

In Jamaica, if women’s football might benefit from a small percentage of the grants given to athletics, it would become a dominant force in the sport.

In 2019, the Reggae Girlz were the first team from the Caribbean to qualify for the Women’s World Cup.
