Devices required to downgrade iOS

  1. iPhone to downgrade
  2. A Mac or PC computer with iTunes

Things to do before downgrading

  • Check iCloud Backup in case there is a problem during downgrading.

Go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud.

iCloud Backup > Wipe Backup If you haven’t backed up yet, tap “Back up now.”

  • Check all iPhone space and check the free space on your computer or Mac. In order to have some space left for backup files, for example, we have 39.8GB of data on our iPhone, at least 41GB of space on the computer.

Downgrade process

  1. Lets reset our iPhone first.

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Transfer or Reset > Reset > select “Reset All Settings”.

After that, restart the machine and follow the next steps.

2. Plug in the Lightning cable to connect your iPhone to your Mac or computer.

3. On the Finder bar, the name of the iPhone will appear next to it. Click into the name of the iPhone.

Once connected, press “Trust” and you will be taken to this page.

At the Backups section, select “Back up all the data on you iPhone to this Mac”

Wait until the system finishes backing up the data.

3. While waiting for the Back Up, go to download the iOS 15.5 file at the website below.

Tap on iPhone.

Choose the iPhone that matches the model that will be downgraded.

When you press it, you will find a software version that we can go down. as in this case We will be able to downgrade from iOS 16 to iOS 15.5.

You can press it.

Press download now. (Make sure to check if there is enough space for the iOS file that’s regarding to download.)

4. When the data back up is finished, check to see if there is a back up or not by observing the date and time of the back up.

5. Turn off Find My

Please turn off Find My on your iPhone first.

Go to Settings > Apple ID > Find My > Find My iPhone.

Turn off Find My iPhone > Enter Apple ID password for verification.

Next will go into the Restore process to downgrade from iOS 16 to iOS 15.5.

6. Restore to downgrade

Come to this page and hold down Shift or Option and click on the word. “Restore iPhone…”

Select the iOS file that we downloaded from ipsw.me by pressing open or Double-click.

Then a window will pop up saying that we are going to Restore to iOS 15.5 > press Restore.

Wait for the restore to complete (in the meantime, the iPhone will display an Apple icon with a progress tube below it).

7. After the restore is complete, set up the device like when you bought a new device.

Follow the steps until you find the Apps and Data page to choose from. “Does not transfer apps and data”

Next, sign in with your Apple ID and continue setting up until you see the “Welcome to iPhone” page.

Next will go into the process of restoring the data that has been backed up back in the iPhone so that all data, apps, photos, notes, files are back to their former glory.

8. Come to this page and select “Set up as new Device” > then press Continue.

Click on Manage Backups…

Select the last backup file >Right click and select “Show In Finder”

Click into the Back Up file.

Locate the file named Info.plist > right-click the file and select Open With > Open With TextEdit.

We’ll edit the version code at this point.

Press Command+F and type the word “Product Version” in the search box at the top.

Under the word Product Version, there will be the version number of iOS, from the original “16.0” We will change it to “15.0”.

The solution is to subtract 6 and replace it with 5.

When done, press command+S to save > press Done.

When editing the file, we will see that the Software Version number will be changed to 15.0 already.

9. Click on the word “Restore Backup…”

Select the correct backup file, then press “Restore”.

A window like this will appear. You can click on the word Erase and Retore.

Wait until the last restore is complete.

When the restore is complete, check if the software version of the iPhone is version 15.5 or not. If so, it means that we have downloaded and restored the data back to the device.

Once the restore is complete, the iPhone will appear like this, keep following the steps until you see the “Welcome to iPhone” page.
